Avenue of Excellence

The Tintern Grammar Avenue of Excellence celebrates Alumni who have achieved outstanding distinction in their professions or made a significant contribution to their communities.

These individuals represent the values of Tintern Grammar, and the diverse pathways taken by graduates of the School.

About the Avenue of Excellence

The Avenue of Excellence was established to formally recognise exceptional Alumni whose achievements have had meaningful impact in areas such as science, the arts, business, public service, sport, education and community leadership.

Inductees are nominated by members of the Tintern community and selected in recognition of their leadership, influence and contribution to society.

Celebrating the Tintern legacy

The Avenue of Excellence reflects the enduring values of Tintern Grammar, and the remarkable contributions made by generations of its Alumni.

Across fields as diverse as science, the arts, sport, public service and community leadership, Tintern graduates have pursued their passions with integrity, curiosity and a commitment to making a positive impact in the world.

By recognising these achievements, the Avenue of Excellence honours the accomplishments of past students while inspiring current and future Tintern students.

Professor Emeritus Charlotte Anderson AM

Class of 1932
Australian Pioneer of Paediatric Gastroenterology

Inducted 2017
Professor Charlotte Anderson was a pioneering medical researcher who helped establish paediatric gastroenterology as a specialist field. Her groundbreaking research identified gluten as the cause of coeliac disease, transforming diagnosis and treatment worldwide.


Mavis Robertson AM

Class of 1946
Superannuation Pioneer and Social Justice Campaigner

Inducted 2017
Mavis Robertson played a key role in the development of Australia’s compulsory superannuation system and co-founded the Mother’s Day Classic, raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

Scotty James

Class of 2013
World Champion Snowboarder

Inducted 2017
Scotty James is one of Australia’s most successful snowboarders, winning world championships and Olympic medals in the halfpipe discipline.

Helen Reddy

Grammy Award-Winning Music Artist

Inducted 2017
Internationally acclaimed singer Helen Reddy achieved global success in the 1970s. Her iconic song I Am Woman became a worldwide anthem and earned a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.


Professor Helen Quinn AO

Professor Helen Quinn is a globally respected theoretical physicist whose research has significantly advanced the field of particle physics.

Penelope Thwaites AM

Class of 1960
Concert Pianist and Composer

Inducted 2017
Penelope Thwaites is an internationally recognised concert pianist and composer who has performed extensively around the world and championed Australian music internationally.

Kate Redwood AM

Class of 1966
Community Service Advocate

Inducted 2017
Kate Redwood has dedicated her career to community leadership and local government and was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the people of Victoria.

Louise Hearman

Class of 1981
Archibald Prize-Winning Artist

Inducted 2017
Louise Hearman is an acclaimed Australian artist whose work has been widely exhibited and recognised through major national portrait prizes.


Kathy Watt OAM

Class of 1982
Olympic Champion Cyclist

Inducted 2017
Kathy Watt won Olympic gold in the Women’s Road Race at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and remains one of Australia’s most accomplished cyclists.

Professor Melissa Southey OAM

Molecular Geneticist

Inducted 2017
Professor Melissa Southey is an internationally recognised cancer geneticist whose research focuses on hereditary cancer risk and prevention.

Cheryl Batagol PSM

Environmental and Sustainability Leader

Cheryl Batagol has held numerous leadership roles in environmental protection including Chair of the Environment Protection Authority Victoria.


Dr Janine Kirk AO

Janine Kirk has had a distinguished career across business, government and the not-for-profit sector and established successful social enterprises supporting the Melbourne community.


Kate Jenkins AO

Champion of Equal Rights and Transformational Leader

Kate Jenkins AO is a leader, lawyer, adviser and advocate who has led cultural reform and advanced diversity, inclusion and performance in Australian workplaces, sport, the arts, parliament and education.
